"As she has never failed to do, again today the Church continues to recommend the practice of spiritual direction, not only to all whose who wish to follow the Lord up close, but to every Christian who wishes to live responsibly his baptism, that is, the new life in Christ."
-Pope Benedict XVI, 2011-
Since the very beginning of Christianity, Spiritual Direction has been an essential element in the spiritual quest; the deep yearning to know God, ourselves, and others, and live meaningful lives proclaiming the truth of what is revealed in our hearts.
We are calIed and guided by the Holy Spirit to abundant love and life, yet sometimes in all the surrounding busyness and noise, it is hard for us to hear God's voice, to accept God's promptings.
If you would like to become better able to recognize God's voice and live fully the implications of what that voice calls you to, consider the Gift of Spiritual Direction.

WHEN IS THE THE RIGHT TIME TO SEEK SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
Spiritual direction is helpful at any time and all throughout life. The very thought that it might be something you want to explore suggests that the Holy Spirit is inviting you to grow closer to the Lord.

And still other times, one finally has the time and desire to reflect on their rlationship with God and others, and would like to be guided in that.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A SPIRITUAL DIRECTION SESSION?
The subject matter of Spiritual Direction is what seems significant in the life of the person seeking direction. It could be exploring a critical issue or a dream, discerning life choices, discovering ways to pray, or simply acknowledging a longing or question that persists over time.
The Spiritual Director remains present to the directee through deep listening, evocative questions, support, and creating a safe and confidential environment where one can openly and prayerfully explore where God's spirit is leading.
HOW OFTEN DOES SPIRITUAL DIRECTION OCCUR?
Usually, Spiritual Direction meetings occur monthly and last for an hour. The need of the person seeking direction is always honored.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPIRITUAL DIRECTION AND COUNSELING?
In general, it can be said that therapeutic relationships deal primarily with problem areas of one's life and attempt to bring a healthy resolution to those issues. OUR SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS
The Spiritual Directors at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church are rooted in the Catholic faith and have completed a three-year formation and certification program through Houston's Cenacle Spiritual Direction Insititute, established in 1985.
They are trained and experienced in the art of helping others to pause and savor their lives and to realize that every day events are the means most often through which God comes to meet us.
Kathleen Messina and Mary Accinelli
St. Angela Merici Catholic Church also has three parishioners currently in formation for Spiritual Direction. During their formation, they will continue serving in various Spiritual Life Ministries, and with supervision and the knowledge and consent of the person seeing direction, are able to accept directees.
